Investment funds,
explained properly.

Millions of New Zealanders have money invested funds through KiwiSaver alone (yes, your KiwiSaver fund is an investment fund), yet many of us couldn't confidently answer three fairly basic questions.

What am I actually invested in?

What is it costing me?

How do I know whether my fund is doing a good job?

In this live webinar, we'll explain how investment funds actually work, how people invest in them, what to look for when choosing one, and how they can fit into a long-term wealth strategy.

You don't need to understand the share market or follow financial news. You don't need to spend your evenings watching charts. In fact, that's rather the point.

THE MISCONCEPTION

You can be brilliant with numbers and still have no idea where to start with investing in funds.

We see this often.

We work with chartered accountants, CFOs, senior professionals and business owners who deal with numbers every day. They read financial statements, manage budgets, run companies and make decisions involving significant amounts of money.

Then the conversation turns to investment funds and the questions become surprisingly basic: where do I actually go to invest? Which company do I use? Is $500 a month enough to bother with?

What actually happens to my money once you invest it?

One of the biggest misconceptions we come across is that investing in funds means learning how to pick shares, following markets or becoming someone who has an opinion about what Tesla is going to do next. It doesn't.

A well-constructed investment strategy can actually be remarkably low maintenance. You can own investments in hundreds or even thousands of companies around the world without choosing those companies yourself or checking the market every morning.

But if nobody has ever explained how it works, it's very easy to keep putting it off.

"Doing nothing is still an investment decision. It just doesn't feel like one."

WHAT WE'LL COVER

Investment funds, made easier to understand.

What is an investment fund?

What you're actually buying, where your money goes and what you own once you've invested.

Where do you actually invest?

Fund manager, investment platform or financial adviser?

We'll explain the different ways New Zealanders can access investment funds and what's genuinely different about each.

Fees, tax and PIR

We'll look at what investment fees actually pay for, when paying more may or may not be justified, and how PIE tax works.

We'll also talk about PIR, because it's one of those little things many people set once and never think about again.

What about your KiwiSaver?

IWe'll show you how to think about your KiwiSaver beyond simply looking at last year's return, and what else you should be paying attention to.

Funds aren't the same as picking shares

We'll look at one of the biggest misconceptions about investing and why owning an investment fund doesn't mean spending your evenings researching individual companies.

Active vs Passive

What do these terms actually mean? What are you paying for?

We'll look at the trade-offs between the two and why we don't believe the answer is as simple as saying one is always better.

How much do you need to start?

Is $500 a month worth investing?

What about $10,000? $100,000?

And why does the conversation change considerably depending on whether you're starting at 35 or 50?

The mistakes we see most often

We'll finish with some of the investment mistakes we regularly see people make. Maria will also share a few she's made herself. And then: your questions.  We'll leave time at the end for live Q&A.

WHY THIS MATTERS

The fund isn't the goal. What it allows you to do is.

My name is Alexa Young

1. Spending six weeks in Italy while the mortgage still gets paid at home

2. Working four days instead of five once you're in your mid-fifties.

3. Having the option to retire earlier than you originally planned.

4. Selling your business when you decide you're ready, rather than when you need the money.

5. Knowing that if life doesn't go according to plan for a year, you have enough behind you to absorb it.

Nobody builds an investment portfolio because they've always dreamed of owning units in an investment fund. We invest because we want what the capital can eventually give us.

The objective isn't simply to own investments. It's to build enough capital, over enough time, to create choices.

Financial Data Analysis

WHO IT'S FOR

Does this sound familiar?

🗸 You earn well but aren't convinced you're turning enough of that income into long-term wealth.

🗸 You have money sitting in the bank because investing has never felt like a decision you had enough information to make confidently.

🗸 Property makes sense to you because it's tangible, but investment funds still feel abstract.

🗸 You have KiwiSaver or other investments but couldn't confidently explain exactly what you own — or why.

🗸 You know you should probably understand investing better, but haven't had the time or inclination to become a "markets person."

🗸 You've opened a fund comparison table, read about two rows and quietly closed the tab.

You don't need any previous investment knowledge. And you certainly don't need to be "good with money" before you come.

SETTING EXPECTATIONS

A quick note on what this webinar is, and what it isn’t.

Not a stock-picking session.

We won't be telling you which company is about to take off or what the market will do next.

Not a list of funds to buy.

There isn't one investment that's appropriate for everyone, and you should be cautious of anyone who recommends an investment without first understanding your circumstances.

Not personalised financial advice.

This webinar is educational and provides general information.

What we will do.

Help you understand how investment funds work, what matters when you're assessing them, and how to start asking better questions about your own investments.

WHO IS PRESENTING

Financial Adviser · Investment Specialist
Director, Diamond Property & Wealth

Maria Temnyuk

Maria has worked in financial services for close to two decades and today spends much of her time helping professionals, families and business owners make better decisions about how they invest and build wealth.

Her approach to investing is practical. You don't need to become obsessed with financial markets to invest well. You need to understand what you're investing in, why you're doing it and how it fits into the bigger picture.

Maria also understands some of the hesitation around investing personally. There was a period when she was very good at generating income and reinvesting into business, but much less deliberate about building wealth outside it.

That experience is part of the reason she's passionate about making investment funds easier to understand without oversimplifying them.
